Description: Geo-spatial data analysis based on MCDA (multiple-criteria decision analysis) technique is a quick and rational approach to develop flood hazard maps (FHMs) – both extent and depth. Catchment and stream characteristics which include slope, relative elevation, distance from river center line, curve number and Shreve’s stream order can aid to demarcate potential riverine flood boundaries. At AIG, various local and global datasets along with digital terrain (elevation) data are used to produce required geo-spatial inputs for the approach. Riverine FHMs for five return periods (25-, 50-, 100-, 250- and 500-year) are produced. Flood extents of the hazard maps are validated using local flood maps, hydraulic modeling outputs, and/or flood maps from vendors after appropriate assumption. FHMs produced by other companies typically provide just the extent of flood risk, while the AIG FHMs provide not only extent but depth within the footprint as well. This detailed hazard allows for additional risk insights as well as refined pricing approach.
